Hino Motors Ltd., a division of Toyota Motor Corp., agreed to pay more than $1.6 billion in criminal and civil penalties to resolve allegations of falsifying engine emissions data and importing noncompliant diesel engines into the United States.

The settlement, reached with the U.S. Department of Justice, the Environmental Protection Agency and other federal and state agencies, marks one of the largest resolutions in the EPA’s mobile source program history, according to the DOJ.
