Carla Gemmati learned the hard way that her condo association, like others in South Florida, went too far in trying to cut expenses.

The board that runs her community, Lake Pointe in Oakland Park, decided last year it could no longer afford the $90,000 annual tab for windstorm insurance and canceled coverage on the 18 buildings in the complex.
