With the City of Miami facing a projected $100 million deficit for the coming year, a new structure for firefighter salaries and pensions would be a critical step toward a balanced budget.
As news media reports have pointed out, many Miami firefighters receive upwards of $200,000 a year in salary and benefits under their 2007 union contract. In addition, firefighters will receive a substantial portion of the projected $115 million the city will need to add to its pension fund in 2011.
