Developer Mark Siffin won final approval Thursday from Miami commissioners to build two large electronic billboards north of downtown, marking the end of a long-standing city ban on new billboard construction.

The focus now shifts to whether Siffin and his partners can close on a $230 million deal by next January to purchase the project site adjacent to the Miami Herald headquarters from the newspaper’s parent, McClatchy Co.
