Banking compliance officers confronted a panel of regulators Thursday with complaints that “hyper-regulation” is actually distracting them from effectively doing their jobs in the fight against money laundering.

In the end, the regulators could offer little more than sympathy as everything from rebellions in the Middle East to populist lawmakers responding to the financial crisis keep the rules piling on often overworked compliance staff.
