A bill seeking to abolish judicial nominating commissions for appellate judges in Florida would politicize the selection process and give Floridians the worst aspects of the federal judicial system, a national expert on the judiciary said.

State Rep. Charles McBurney, R-Jacksonville, filed House Joint Resolution 1097 on Wednesday. The bill calls for a constitutional amendment to do away with commissions for vetting applicants for openings on the Florida Supreme Court and the district courts of appeal. Commissions would still select circuit and county court nominees.
