The crack cocaine prosecutions against co-defendants Arthur Smith and Curtis Butler are similar, but their cases have turned out very differently at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Each pleaded guilty to a federal crack cocaine crime in South Florida. When it came time for sentencing, their lawyers argued they should get the benefit of a new sentencing law that set more lenient mandatory minimum sentences for crack offenses.
