Backers of proposed mega resort-casino complexes for South Florida accused their foes of fear-mongering and said the increasingly heated debate is distracting from a bigger issue: the need to combat illegal gambling.

Opponents and supporters of so-called destination resorts with casino components faced off today at a forum co-sponsored by the Beacon Council at Miami-Dade College’s downtown Miami campus. The forum was held weeks before the Florida Legislature begins debate on a bill to legalize casino gambling in South Florida.
