The Huffington Post, ABC News and countless other news outlets have been reporting a new trend in this country — one that will affect any spouse who is getting a divorce or any former spouse who has been through a divorce. It’s called alimony reform. In several states across the country, lawmakers are closely examining current alimony laws and making significant changes. Florida is one of many states whose Legislature has presented efforts to reform alimony. It is House Bill 549.

Alimony, or spousal support, is financial support awarded in divorce cases, paid by the higher wage earning spouse to the lower wage earning spouse, and in some cases non-working spouses. It is designed to help pay living expenses, obtain training or education to re-enter the workforce, or to help the receiving spouse transition from married life to single life.
