The Miami-Dade County School Board agreed to pay nearly $1.9 million to the family of a student who was stabbed to death.

A fight between Coral Gables High School students Juan Carlos Rivera, 17, and Andy Rodriguez resulted in Rivera’s death. Rodriguez was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison. Plaintiff counsel contended the school did not properly assess troubled students and failed to supervise heavily trafficked areas of school properly. Counsel noted a police officer who should have been on campus that day was in court instead.
