John DeGrove, a fifth-generation Floridian who spent his life beseeching his home state to smartly manage its growth and environmental policies, has died at the age of 87.

Born in St. Augustine in 1924, DeGrove grew up on what he sometimes described as a “one-sick-mule” farm. Awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart for his military service in World War II, he spent his entire professional life in the public arena, primarily involved in land-use issues as both an academic and an activist.
