Summer is rapidly approaching, which in South Florida traditionally means hurricanes, humidity and legions of college and graduate school students looking for practical experience as interns.

Many employers hire — what they believe to be — interns for a variety of reasons ranging from the altruistic to the capitalistic. And with the recent economic downturn, internships have expanded from summertime experience to workers looking to make a career change or get their foot in the door of an increasingly tight labor market. More and more employers are using unpaid interns not just during the traditional summer internship season but year-round as well. This expanded view of unpaid internships may appear to be an easy solution to many an employment challenge, but like a storm out of season, unwary employers may be in for an unwelcome surprise.
