The upcoming release of an unlimited number of top-level domains — the dot-coms of the virtual world — will create a significant potential for trademark infringement. The trouble might come from allowing third parties to register the brands of trademark holders.

ICANN, the private non-profit organization that coordinates the Internet’s system of unique identifiers, has released new top-level domains. By 2013, it is scheduled to release an unlimited number of them.
