A lawsuit is like a book. Chapter one opens with a dispute. The saga customarily continues until it reaches the traditional final chapter — a jury trial and verdict. On occasion there is an epilogue, written to address an appeal.

But in recent years, fewer cases in Miami are being tried before juries. Most cases end not with melodrama and a crescendo, but with a handshake and a signed release. Today, mediation is the new trial.
