A Fort Lauderdale bankruptcy judge ordered a South Carolina attorney to surrender his passport and make himself available for questioning about his alleged role in a real estate fraud that resulted in millions in losses for a Michigan civil service retirement fund.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Raymond Ray had already found George Kastanes in contempt March 22 after the lawyer and his wife repeatedly failed to appear for hearings. Kastanes appeared Thursday in Ray’s courtroom after he was arrested this week by federal marshals as he stepped off a flight from Costa Rica at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood-International Airport. The couple has maintained a residence in Hollywood since 2009.
