In a low-lit anteroom filled with monied professionals at the City Hall restaurant in Miami, attorney Richard Lydecker stood at the right hand of a fundraising event’s featured guest: U.S. Senator Bill Nelson.

Nelson was there to help raise campaign money not for himself, but for some of the region’s other Democrats seeking elective office. Lydecker introduced each potential donor to the senator. Some snapped photos. Others snacked on gourmet goat cheese pizza and tuna sashimi.
