Employees felt family-owned Stiefel Laboratories Inc. would never sell out — no matter how big the 160-year-old Coral Gables-based pharmaceutical company got.

“That was a source of pride with the company, that it was family-owned and it was the largest independent dermatology company in the world,” former Stiefel salesman Tim Finnerty said from his home in Brighton, Michigan. “We were told at every meeting we ever had that the company would remain family-owned, that they would never sell.”
