Even when waves of economic bad news came crashing into South Florida’s shores, the region had the strength of at least a few fortresses to help defend it from assaults of the Great Recession.

It may have seemed at times that our economic foundation was built on sand. But that’s not a bad thing if it means people travel from around the world to visit our beaches. Through it all, tourism soldiered on, setting records during the downturn.
