For obvious reasons, plaintiffs with big-money damages claims get all the headlines. But consider the relative havoc that one California plaintiff is managing to cause over an alleged loss of a few measly cents in overtime wages.
Since the beginning of 2011, Office Depot Inc. has been paying its lawyers at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius to fight a proposed class action brought by a plaintiff who claims the company failed to pay him $0.23 in overtime two years ago. A federal judge in San Francisco refused to dismiss the case Friday and instead certified the class, turning a two-bit lawsuit into a legitimate headache for the Boca Raton-based office supply retailer.
