Mortgage applications in the U.S. declined last week as fewer Americans purchased homes or refinanced properties.

The Mortgage Bankers Association’s index decreased 4.5 percent in the period ended Aug. 10, the most in six weeks. The purchase gauge dropped 2 percent, the fifth straight decline, taking it to the lowest level since February. The refinance index fell 5.1 percent, the Washington-based group said Wednesday.
