Agriculture and horticulture make up a significant part of Florida’s economy, but just like businesses and homeowners, many family farmers and fisherman have been struggling to stay afloat.

According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the number of farms in Florida increased by 3,500 over the past 10 years. In 2010, there were 47,500 commercial farms in Florida, occupying 9.25 million acres, with an average of 195 acres per farm. Florida ranked second in the nation for the production of greenhouse and nursery products in 2010 and in 2009. Florida was also ranked second in the nation in the value of vegetable production and seventh in all crops.
