Mortgage applications in the U.S. increased last week as record-low borrowing costs spurred purchases and home refinancing.

The Mortgage Bankers Association’s index climbed 2.8 percent in the period ended Sept. 21 from the prior week, the group said Wednesday. Purchase applications rose 0.7 percent and refinancing increased 3.3 percent.
