A 4 percent fee would be imposed on dealers’ sale of guns and ammunition with the money to go to mental health treatment, under a bill filed Wednesday by a Tampa Democrat.

The measure (SB 1234) by Senator Arthenia Joyner, D-Tampa, would require the money be spent on direct mental health treatment, public awareness of mental health issues, crisis intervention training for law enforcement and other issues aimed at reducing violence by people with mental illness. Some of the money would also go for training teachers to recognize signs of mental illness in students.
