Sugar output in the U.S. will be 2 percent lower than estimated last month, led by a drop in production of sweetener made from beets, the government said.
Mills will produce 8.98 million short tons in the marketing year that began Oct. 1, down from 9.16 million projected last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today in a report. Sweetener made from beets will be 5.1 million tons, lower than 5.3 million forecast last month, while sugar made from cane will reach 3.88 million tons, up from 3.86 million projected in March, according to the report.
