The family of a smoker who died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease recovered $2.2 million.

The estate’s counsel alleged R.J. Reynolds’s and Liggett Group’s negligence caused Mattie Emma Ward’s death at age 68 from nearly 50 years of being addicted to nicotine. The estate’s expert on addictive behavior testified her addiction caused her COPD and death.
