The city of Lauderdale Lakes is illegally trying to charge apartment property owners fees to conduct annual inspections without a search warrant, the owners charged in a lawsuit filed in federal court.

A coalition of 11 apartment complex owners brought suit Saturday against the city over its enforcement of an ordinance that had been on the books for years. However, the ordinance was not implemented until February when the city commission passed a resolution retaining the services of nearby Lauderhill to physically conduct the inspections.
