The electric blanket Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Angelica Zayas received from her parents for Christmas meant they had given her their blessing to go off to college. It also was proof they recognized she lived in a world bridging her Cuban upbringing and American culture.
"I actually applied to American (University) law and got in," she said. "But the big debate in the house was when I told my parents. This is a quote: ‘Weren’t we good parents? Why would you want to go away? Weren’t we good parents?’ "
