Attorneys fighting for John E. Ferguson — a paranoid schizophrenic mass killer who believes he is Jesus Christ — lost their bid today to stop the execution on mental health grounds.

Ferguson was executed at 6:17 p.m. late this afternoon by lethal injection at Florida State Prison.

Governor Rick Scott set today for Ferguson’s execution, but amicus briefs claims filed in the U.S. Supreme Court claim Florida and other states are not properly applying the court’s standard set in Panetti v. Quarterman in 2007.
