Bankruptcy filings in both consumer and commercial categories have dropped precipitously this year, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute.

There was a 41 percent drop in commercial Chapter 11 filings to 357 in August from 604 a year before. Total bankruptcies for the year will fall below 1 million for the first time since 2007, the institute projected.
