To the untrained eye, it appeared to be just another one of the millions of selfies posted on social media every day. But for the U.S. Air Force, it was an invaluable piece of intelligence used to plan an attack on one of ISIS’ secret command bases.
Less than 24 hours after the photo was posted, the U.S. Air Force took the entire building out with three JDAM-equipped bombs. While details are scarce about how the location was gathered, many suspect that the U.S. relied on metadata and geotags embedded within the photo.
