An openly gay Orlando lawyer who has spent his career fighting for diversity brought the Florida Bar to its feet Friday with an emotional speech addressing last weekend’s shooting.

“It’s still fresh,” Larry Smith of Southern Trial Counsel told the general assembly of the Florida Bar Convention in Orlando. “It still hurts. And right now it feels like many of the things we thought we had accomplished have been stripped away from us by what happened just down the road.”
