A Florida Bar referee’s report recommends 91 days’ suspension for Maria Elena Perez, the Coral Gables attorney who represented Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro.
The referee’s report by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Norma Shepard Lindsey accepted a consent judgment and found Perez guilty of violating ethics rules governing fees, trust accounts, meritorious claims, fairness to opposing counsel, truthfulness, client communication and other aspects of professional conduct in her representation of Shapiro from 2010-2012.
