A fractured Florida Supreme Court on Friday threw out dozens of death sentences by requiring juries for the first time to reach a unanimous verdict to impose the death penalty.
Until now, Florida juries had only advisory power on capital punishment, with trial judges making the final decision. Verdicts as lopsided as 7-5 could send a defendant to death row.
