A divided South Florida appeals court rejected a legal-dependency request from four undocumented-immigrant children who entered the United States after their parents died in El Salvador.

The ruling by a panel of the Third District Court of Appeal was one in a series of cases in which minors have fled Central American countries and sought determinations of dependency — a status that could ultimately help them seek permanent residency in the United States.
