A case pending before the Florida Supreme Court could change the way courts handle Baker Act hearings — but Palm Beach Circuit Chief Judge Jeffrey Colbath is hoping it won’t.

The suit has divided Florida’s high court and a state appellate court, and pits 15 patients against Florida in a bid to block video conferencing and force judicial officers to appear in person at state health facilities to hold hearings on involuntary hospitalizations.
