A Miami federal judge declined to release Volkswagen AG executive Oliver Schmidt on bond Monday after his initial appearance on a criminal conspiracy charge connected to the company’s emissions scandal.

Schmidt, 48, who was arrested Saturday in Miami during a vacation, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William Turnoff. Schmidt lives and works in Germany. The criminal complaint was filed in Detroit.
