Miami-Dade County immigration politics gets murkier by the day. So does immigration law.

In a county populated mostly by newcomers and their children, the mayor and the County Commission are negotiating over whether and to what extent local police and jailers should help federal agents detain and deport undocumented residents. A few commissioners are pushing to protect them in a show of independence that might risk the loss of federal funds.
