Immigrant rights groups pleaded for federal officials to halt the deportation of a Nicaraguan man appealing for asylum and demanded an investigation into an alleged increase in detentions when immigrants show up for routine appointments in South Florida.

Espilvio Sanchez-Benavidez faced deportation after appearing at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office near Fort Lauderdale for a regular check-in, his family says.
