Zachary Lutz was born on Feb. 12, 1984, weighing less than four pounds.Shortly after his birth at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, he was administered E-Ferol, a medication used to prevent blindness in premature infants.Zachary died on May 13, Mother’s Day, a victim of the drug that was meant to help him. Thirty-seven other infants, including one at Miami Children’s Hospital, suffered the same fate.
“It was devastating,” recalls Susan Rauh, Zachary’s sister, who was 19 at the time. “It still affects [the family] to this day.”
