The fractious relationship between DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James and a judge on the county’s superior court has emerged as a driving force in James’ contested re-election bid for the State Bar of Georgia’s governing board.

Thompson Hine partner Gary Freed said Monday that he has considered seeking an active role within the State Bar of Georgia “for some time” and now his practice is stable enough to allow him to do that. But his decision to seek James’ board of governors seat was spurred by how the DA handled a 2013 dispute with Superior Court Judge Mark Anthony Scott over the release of a special purpose grand jury report. Freed defended Scott against a mandamus action brought by the DA’s office, which ended up costing Scott more than $128,000 in legal fees.
