John Childs spent 24 years in private practice, first in Minnesota, then in Chicago, when a headhunter called him with an opportunity to go in-house in Atlanta at Georgia-Pacific.

The job was to manage litigation for the company's sprawling asbestos litigation—a post he was suited for based on his serving as regional counsel in asbestos building litigation for W.R. Grace. “I had experience running a large group of attorneys in multi-jurisdictions and basically putting together teams, and working with experts and managing company witnesses,” he said.

Starting as chief litigation counsel in 2005, Childs now holds the title of assistant general counsel, litigation, at Georgia-Pacific. He manages 12 in-house lawyers in that group, among more than 50 in the company's in-house department.
