A Gwinnett County jury delivered a post-apportionment award of nearly $1.9 million to the family of a woman killed when a tire failed, sending the SUV she was in tumbling on I-85.

After prodding by the judge to bring a holdout juror around, the panel found tire-maker Goodyear 65 percent liable for the death of Asha Nimaga, and allocated 35 percent to the driver, who was also a plaintiff.

Plaintiffs' lawyers had to overcome evidence indicating the Chevy Suburban was traveling at 88 miles per hour prior to the wreck and were also concerned the jury might be swayed by religious bias. The plaintiffs are Muslims from Kenya who wear an Islamic head covering, or hijab, in accordance with their faith.
