Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr

Continuing his strategy of discouraging competition, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced Friday his first election campaign fundraising effort has passed the $1 million mark.

Carr reported $466,000 in donations on the last campaign finance disclosure date, June 30, 2017. His campaign announced Friday he has raised more than $538,000 since the last report. The campaign said it now holds $700,000 cash on hand heading into the November election.

“Since I took office as Georgia's Attorney General, I have remained committed to upholding the Constitution and protecting Georgians by building relationships based on common ground and building trust with anyone willing to come to the table,” Carr said in the news release. “I am grateful that so many Georgians are supporting our campaign. We have much to accomplish together in the months—and hopefully years—ahead.”

In December, Carr announced the endorsements of 16 current and former members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives from Georgia. Topping the list was former boss Sen. Johnny Isakson, who was with Carr at the swearing-in ceremony for attorney general in the Georgia Capitol Rotunda in November 2016. Before moving on to Gov. Nathan Deal's team as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Carr served as Isakson's chief of staff. It was there, Carr's statement said, that he “solidified his credentials as a champion of liberty, lower taxes, the rule of law and strong national security.”

Carr said has traveled the state since taking the job helping spread greater awareness and understanding about the role of the Attorney General's Office. Among the issues he has targeted for attention are human trafficking, opioid addiction and elder abuse.
