A Georgia judge was killed in a traffic accident Saturday, according to news reports.

Putnam County Chief Magistrate Ellen Pierce, 62, died from injuries in a 6:30 p.m. crash on Ga. 44 near Eatonton, east of Atlanta. She was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that collided with a Ford F-250 pickup that was pulling a boat, according to reports in the Macon Telegraph's macon.com news site, as well as other news outlets quoting Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.

Pierce is from Atlanta, according to her biography on her office's website. She started as a legal secretary in 1978, working for attorneys in Atlanta. She moved to Putnam County in 1990 to work for a firm in Eatonton. She went to work in 1993 for Judge Yvonne Harrell, who was chief magistrate and probate judge at the time. When Harrell retired in 1996, Pierce was appointed chief magistrate judge and began serving Jan. 1, 1997. She was elected to the position of chief magistrate in 1998, and reelected in 2002, 2006 and 2014.

Her bio says: “Judge Pierce has served the citizens of Putnam County in the Probate and Magistrate Courts of this county one person at a time.”

Pierce had qualified to run again in the May 22 nonpartisan judicial election. Three candidates have already qualified to run for that job: Dorothy Adams, an attorney with Fort & Adams in Eatonton; Lucindia Monday, a compliance officer; and Stephen Eagleton, who lists his occupation as law/mediation. They would have run against her. Now they'll be running for an open seat.
