The Atlanta legal community faces a steep climb to meet a goal of raising $250,000 for the Atlanta Community Food Bank by the end of Friday, the last day of the Georgia Legal Food Frenzy.

At 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, the Atlanta portion of the statewide event had raised about $145,000, leaving it $105,000 shy of its goal. The final days of the campaign are usually very productive, however. Last year the community raised $70,000 in the final two days for a total of $190,000.

Many firms and offices are competing hard to raise the most funds, with King & Spalding and Joe S. Habachy holding first and second places, respectively. King & Spalding, at $17,565, has already beaten its 2017 total, and Habachy, at $14,460, has publicly set a goal of $20,000.

Here are the other top teams in the Atlanta area: Georgia Institute of Technology Office of Legal Affairs, $11,700; Troutman Sanders, $7,376; Jenkins & Roberts LLC, $6,165; Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, $4,736; DeKalb County Public Defender's Office, $4,731; Jones Day, $3,385; Serta Simmons Bedding LLC, $3,065; Lueder, Larkin & Hunter LLC, $2,955.

The event is timed so that food banks can stock up for the coming months, when Georgia children can't get the meals they rely on during the school year. One in four of all Georgia children don't know where their next meal is coming from, the food banks say.

Last year, the whole event—sponsored by state Attorney General Chris Carr, the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar and the Georgia Food Banks Association—raised a record $329,000 and 19,000 pounds of food for all of Georgia's food banks.
