The Atlanta legal community raised $247,781 over two weeks for the Atlanta Community Food Bank, reaching 99 percent of its $250,000 goal for this year's Georgia Legal Food Frenzy.

Although it fell shy of its target, the total was about a 30 percent increase from last year's online donations. More funds, from cash and checks and matching gifts, and canned goods are expected to come from the teams as organizers tally the winners in various categories of the statewide effort for food banks.

The event is timed to restock food banks during the summer, when children who rely on breakfast and lunch programs at school cannot get them. Given that food banks can provide four meals for $1, the online total in Atlanta means the legal community raised enough to buy 991,284 meals.

“You are incredible! Thank you!” wrote Alfia Tarassenko, corporate relations manager for the Atlanta food bank, to team captains in an email shortly after the event ended at 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

Official winners will be announced later in the month, but Joe S. Habachy, PC, Attorney at Law, raised the most online in Atlanta with $22,910. Habachy was a three-time winner but sat out of last year's competition due to a trial.

King & Spalding raised the most online last year but came in second this year. Its $21,649 was a 26 percent increase from last year.

The other top 20 teams among Atlanta online donations were:

  • Georgia Institute of Technology Office of Legal Affairs, $12,081;
