Late last year, the Suwanee law firm of Kenney & Medina purchased the small frame house where the town's first doctor, Samuel Jackson, opened his medical practice in 1875. The firm restored the original structure and added additional office space to the rear of the original house. When Jackson opened for business 143 years ago on Main Street, the population of Suwanee was 216 people, with a hotel, a department store and other commercial establishments. Pierces Corner, built in 1910, remains standing today and is owned by the Suwanee Downtown Development Authority. Cotton served as the town's economic foundation. Until 1830, the majority of Suwanee area farmers grew cotton. The first cotton gin was built between 1872 and 1875 on the northeast corner of Jackson and Scales Street. Today there is a steel manufacturing facility on the site. Today Suwanee has a population of 19,549 people, according to the most recent U.S. Census estimates. The small frame house that Dr. Jackson occupied is part of "Old Town Suwanee," which has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the original buildings and houses are still occupied. Kenney & Medina moved into the Jackson house in May. Partners Tom Kenney and John Medina share their thoughts about the project.
