The short list sent by the Judicial Nominating Commission to Gov. Nathan Deal to fill two openings on the Georgia Supreme Court emerged from an initial list of 101 nominees. It includes five women, four men and one person of color. The governor is expected to interview them on Aug. 21 and make a decision soon afterward, a spokeswoman said. The governor has two posts to fill on the Supreme Court. Justice Britt Grant is leaving to take a lifetime appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Chief Justice P. Harris Hines is retiring at the end of August. Deal's spokeswoman also said the governor plans to "approve senior status for Chief Justice Hines to ensure the court calendar continues to run smoothly." Presiding Justice Harold Melton will be sworn in as the new chief judge Sept. 4.
