It's still a man's world when it comes to attorney pay, but at least among Georgia-based companies' GCs, women are making their mark. In 2017, a female GC was the highest-paid legal boss at a public company in Georgia and 12th among top attorneys at public companies in the South, according to data released recently from ALM's 2018 GC Compensation Survey. And Aflac Inc.'s Audrey Boone Tillman wasn't the only female on the Georgia list. Lauren Tashma, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary at Graphic Packaging Holding Co., placed No. 6. But before we delve further into the rankings and numbers, a quick word on methodology: Daily Report affiliate ALM Legal Intelligence sifted through 2017 proxy filings from the Fortune 1000 to determine pay for companies' top legal officers. Despite being well-paid, some prominent Georgia GCs like Home Depot's Teresa Wynn Roseborough do not appear in the survey because they are not among the five best-compensated executives at their companies. Similarly, others are omitted—Chick-fil-A's Lynn Chastain, for example—because they are at the helm of privately-held companies' legal departments. The survey ranks GCs by total cash compensation, which is a combination of base salary, cash bonus and nonequity incentives (a form of pay made popular after the Dodd-Frank Act; it is discretionary and often performance-based). ALM Legal Intelligence doesn't factor stock awards and options into the rankings, though data is collected about this often significant compensation element. Each of the GCs listed either did not respond to requests for comment or declined comment for this story.
