Temika Murry, a longtime child advocate, has been named a DeKalb County Juvenile Court judge, effective Nov. 1, to fill a newly-created position.

Her addition will give DeKalb Juvenile Court five full-time judges. Juvenile judges are appointed by the superior court judges on the circuit.

Murry has worked as a senior supervising attorney with the DeKalb County Child Advocacy Center since the agency was started in 2003.

Before that, the University of Georgia School of Law graduate served as a legal advocate with Forever Family, formerly known as Aid to Children of Imprisoned Mothers, for two years on a public interest fellowship from Washington-based Equal Justice Works. She holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Emory University and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame.

The new juvenile court judge has been recognized for her long-standing commitment to child welfare. Murry was the inaugural recipient last year of the Chief Justice P. Harris Hines Child Advocacy Award from the Georgia Supreme Court Committee on Justice for Children.

She serves on the board of the Georgia Association of Counsel for Children and is a certified child welfare legal specialist through the National Association of Counsel for Children.

Murry also is a past president of the DeKalb Lawyers Association and a graduate of DeKalb's Bright Futures Emerging Executives Leadership Program.
